Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation serves as a major degradative pathway for catecholamine transmitters. COMT also plays a key role in metabolizing catechol drugs used to treat hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
COMT exists in two forms within tissues: a soluble form (S-COMT) and a membrane-bound form (MB-COMT), differing at their N-termini. Several transcript variants arise through alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
