Target Information
The ABCG5 gene encodes a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, which transports various molecules across extra- and intracellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCG5 belongs to the White subfamily and functions as a half-transporter that limits intestinal absorption and promotes biliary excretion of sterols. It is expressed in the liver, colon, and intestine.
This gene is located tandemly with ABCG8 on chromosome 2 in a head-to-head orientation. Mutations in ABCG5 may lead to sterol accumulation and atherosclerosis and have been observed in patients with sitosterolemia.
