UCK2 catalyzes the phosphorylation of uridine monophosphate to uridine diphosphate, the first step in pyrimidine nucleoside triphosphate synthesis required for RNA and DNA synthesis. An allele of this gene may also play a role in mediating nonhumoral immunity to Haemophilus influenzae type B.
