Target Information
Opsins are members of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein (G protein)-coupled receptor superfamily.
In addition to visual opsins, mammals possess several photoreceptive non-visual opsins expressed in extraocular tissues.
Opsin 3 is strongly expressed in brain and testis, and weakly expressed in liver, placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, and pancreas.
It may also be expressed in the retina and plays a role in encephalic photoreception.
Expression is enriched in specific regions such as the preoptic area, paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, cerebral cortex, cerebellar Purkinje cells, striatal neurons, thalamic nuclei, and interneurons in the ventral horn of the spinal cord.
