Target Information
MREG probably functions as a cargo-recognition protein that couples cytoplasmic vesicles to the transport machinery. It plays a role in hair pigmentation through melanosome-containing vesicle transport between melanocytes and keratinocytes. Functions as a receptor for RILP and DCTN1 complexes, contributing to retrograde melanosome transport. Overexpression leads to accumulation of late endosomes and lysosomes near the microtubule organizing center (MTOC). MREG binds cholesterol and specific phosphatidylinositols, and is required for normal phagosome clearing and lysosomal enzyme activation in retinal pigment epithelium. It also contributes to degradation of lipofuscin component A2E and may regulate disk membrane biogenesis in photoreceptor rod cells. [UniProt]
