Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key regulator of blood vessel development in embryos and angiogenesis in adult tissues.
VEGFC stimulates lymphatic vessel growth through its specific lymphatic endothelial receptor VEGFR-3.
Inactivation of the VEGFR-3 gene in mice leads to defective blood vessel development and cardiovascular failure, indicating VEGFR3’s essential role in embryonic cardiovascular system development before lymphatic vessel formation.
