Target Information
Presenilins are components of the gamma-secretase protein complex, required for intramembranous processing of type I transmembrane proteins such as Notch and beta-amyloid precursor protein. Notch signaling mediates various developmental cell fates. Processing of beta-amyloid precursor protein generates neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides, the major component of senile plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. PEN2 protein is essential for Notch pathway signaling and gamma-secretase activity and accumulation.
