Target Information

HIF1-alpha (HIF1A) is a subunit of HIF1, a transcription factor found in mammalian cells under reduced oxygen tension. HIF-1 is a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta subunits, both belonging to the basic-helix-loop-helix PAS family of transcription factors.
HIF1 functions as a regulator of the adaptive response to hypoxia, activating transcription of over 40 genes including erythropoietin, glucose transporters, glycolytic enzymes, and VEGF.
HIF1-alpha regulates hypoxia-mediated apoptosis, cell proliferation, and tumor angiogenesis. It interacts with p53 and p300/CBP complexes to modulate hypoxia-responsive gene expression.
In humans, HIF1A is located on chromosome 14q and plays a key role in diseases such as ischemia, cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
