Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on many stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker, although expression on human hematopoietic stem cells is reversible. CD34 may function as a receptor involved in adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. It likely mediates attachment to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and may facilitate binding to lectins through glycan scaffolding. The intracellular domain can be phosphorylated by protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction. CD34 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
