Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins located in the eukaryotic mitochondrial outer membrane. They are also expressed in the plasma membrane. At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play an essential role in cellular metabolism and the early stages of apoptosis. They form major pathways for metabolite exchange (ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate) between cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane is implicated in apoptosis regulation through its redox activity.
