bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) 도메인과 Orange 도메인을 포함하고 있으며, Notch 신호전달의 하위 효과기로서 심혈관계 발달에 필요할 수 있습니다.
HEY1은 전사 억제 인자로 작용하며, 5'-CACGTG-3' 서열에 선호적으로 결합합니다.
또한 심장 전사 활성인자 GATA4 및 GATA6의 전사를 억제하며, 신경계 발달 과정에서도 발현이 보고되었습니다.
