Mouse anti-cortisol monoclonal antibody, clone BGN/C53, recognizes cortisol — a glucocorticoid hormone synthesized from cholesterol by the adrenal cortex. It is released in response to pituitary adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), which is regulated by corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF).
Target Information
Cortisol is the most potent glucocorticoid produced by the human adrenal cortex. It is synthesized from cholesterol and its production is stimulated by pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), regulated by corticotropin releasing factor (CRF).
High cortisol levels inhibit ACTH and CRF secretion via a negative feedback loop. In plasma, most cortisol binds with high affinity to corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG or transcortin).
Cortisol acts through specific intracellular receptors and influences immune function, glucose regulation, vascular tone, and bone metabolism.
