Target Information
Gemin 3 (DEAD box protein 20) belongs to the DEAD box protein family characterized by the conserved Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) motif and is a putative RNA helicase. These proteins are involved in RNA secondary structure alterations such as translation initiation, splicing, and ribosome/spliceosome assembly. Gemin 3 is part of the SMN (survival of motor neurons) complex and may have a catalytic role in RNP function. Dysfunction is associated with spinal muscular dystrophy and muscular atrophy.
