Target Information
Crystallins are divided into two classes: taxon-specific and ubiquitous. The taxon-specific (phylogenetically restricted) crystallins differ from the ubiquitous class, which are major structural proteins in the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index.
The CRYM gene encodes a taxon-specific crystallin protein that binds NADPH and shows sequence similarity to bacterial ornithine cyclodeaminases. Unlike lens crystallins, this protein does not play a structural role but instead binds thyroid hormone, suggesting regulatory or developmental functions. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
