Target Information
In vertebrates, homeobox genes encode transcription factors found in four clusters (A, B, C, D) on separate chromosomes. Their expression is spatially and temporally regulated during embryonic development.
The HOXA1 gene, located in the A cluster on chromosome 7, encodes a DNA-binding transcription factor involved in gene regulation, morphogenesis, and differentiation. It may play a role in proper hindbrain segment placement along the anterior-posterior axis during development. Two transcript variants have been identified, with only one containing the homeodomain region.
