Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell proliferation and regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc can induce apoptosis in multiple cell types. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either the N- or C-terminus of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been identified in several human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus (chromosome 8) to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders. Aberrant expression of c-Myc occurs in tumors of diverse origins, such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
