Target Information

Na⁺/H⁺ exchangers (NHE) are plasma membrane intrinsic proteins that mediate exchange of Na⁺ and H⁺ ions across various tissues. NHEs regulate intracellular pH, Na⁺ absorption, cell volume, and may influence cell proliferation. These exchangers are implicated in physiological and pathological states such as hypertension, organ growth, cancer regression, and renal disorders.
At least seven NHE isoforms (NHE1–7) have been cloned, sharing similar primary structures with 10–12 predicted transmembrane domains. NHE7 (human, 725 aa, chromosome Xp11.4) is ubiquitously expressed and predominantly localized to the trans-Golgi network, mediating Na⁺ or K⁺ influx in exchange for H⁺. It shares ~70% homology with NHE6 and ~25% with other NHEs.
