Target Information
The P2X7 gene encodes a purinoceptor for ATP that functions as a ligand-gated ion channel. It mediates ATP-dependent lysis of macrophages through membrane pore formation, allowing passage of large molecules. Activation by ATP in the cytoplasm may link cellular activity to gene expression changes. Multiple alternatively spliced variants exist, most of which meet nonsense-mediated decay criteria.
