The GPI gene belongs to the GPI family, encoding multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase proteins involved in energy metabolism. The encoded protein is a dimeric enzyme that catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
- Intracellular function: Participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis.
- Extracellular function: Acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
- Clinical relevance: Defects in this gene cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia; severe deficiency may lead to hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
