Glutathione S-transferase M3 (brain), also known as GSTM3, is an enzyme encoded by the GSTM3 gene in humans. It belongs to the mu class of glutathione S-transferases, which play a crucial role in detoxifying electrophilic compounds such as carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, and environmental toxins through conjugation with glutathione.
These genes are located in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are known to be highly polymorphic, influencing susceptibility to toxins and drug efficacy. Mutations in this gene have been associated with a slight increase in certain cancers due to environmental toxin exposure.
