Target Information
AQP0 is the most abundant endogenous protein in the plasma membrane of lens fiber cells, functioning as both a water channel and adhesion molecule essential for lens fiber structure and organization. It features an additional pore constriction unique among aquaporins, potentially responsible for pore gating. The closed AQP0 pore holds three water molecules spaced too far apart for hydrogen bonding. The C-terminal domain undergoes extensive post-translational modifications, including truncations during lens aging, influenced by m-calpain and other proteases. These truncations may contribute to cataract formation.
