Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein. Alternate splice variants have been described, but their full-length nature has not been determined.
