Target Information
AIRE is a transcriptional regulator protein that binds DNA as a dimer and tetramer, but not as a monomer. It is involved in gene expression regulation and immune tolerance.
AIRE is a 545 amino acid nuclear protein containing an HSR domain, two PHD-type zinc fingers, and a SAND domain. It can form homodimers, homotetramers, and nuclear bodies, and interacts with transcriptional coactivators CBP and CREBBP.
Three isoforms of AIRE are reported, one predicted to be a candidate for nuclear-mediated decay (NMD).
Defects in AIRE cause autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), a rare autosomal-recessive autoimmune disorder.
