Target Information

Major histocompatibility (MHC) class II molecules are transmembrane proteins that play a central role in the development and regulation of the immune system.
The protein encoded by the RFXANK gene forms a complex with regulatory factor X-associated protein and regulatory factor-5, binding to the X box motif of certain MHC class II gene promoters and activating their transcription.
This complex interacts with the non-DNA-binding factor MHC class II transactivator (CIITA), which determines cell-type specificity and inducibility of MHC class II expression.
The protein contains ankyrin repeats involved in protein–protein interactions.
Mutations in this gene are associated with bare lymphocyte syndrome type II, complementation group B.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described, with only one showing activation activity.
