UCK2 catalyzes the phosphorylation of uridine monophosphate to uridine diphosphate, the first step in pyrimidine nucleoside triphosphate synthesis required for RNA and DNA production.
An allele of this gene may play a role in nonhumoral immunity to Haemophilus influenzae type B.
