Target Information
IGFs are mitogenic polypeptide growth factors that stimulate proliferation and survival of various cell types, including muscle, bone, and cartilage tissue in vitro. They are mainly produced by the liver, though other tissues also produce IGFs at specific times. Belonging to the insulin gene family, IGFs share structural and functional similarity to insulin but exhibit stronger growth-promoting activity. IGF-II expression is influenced by placenta lactogen, while IGF-I is regulated by growth hormone. Both signal through the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR), and IGF-II also interacts with the IGF-II/Mannose-6-phosphate receptor. Mature IGFs are generated by proteolytic processing of inactive precursor proteins containing N- and C-terminal propeptide regions.
