Target Information
The Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family belongs to the cytidine deaminase enzyme group that acts on monomeric nucleosides and nucleotides. APOBEC3 proteins play a key role in cellular defense against retroviral infection. Specifically, APOBEC3G and, to a lesser extent, APOBEC3F can be incorporated into HIV-1 virions and induce hypermutation in newly synthesized viral DNA, destabilizing the viral genome. This antiviral activity is counteracted by the HIV-1 Vif protein, which promotes APOBEC3G degradation. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can prevent APOBEC3G depletion without impairing its inhibitory function.
