Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. It interacts with CDK4 or CDK6 to prevent kinase activation, functioning as a cell growth regulator controlling G1 phase progression. Ectopic expression suppresses cell growth correlated with wild-type RB1 function. Knockout mouse studies suggest roles in spermatogenesis and tumorigenesis suppression. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding identical proteins have been reported.
