Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels represent a complex class of voltage-gated ion channels with diverse physiological roles including regulation of neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
The KCNG4 gene encodes a member of the potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily G, functioning as a modulatory subunit. It is strongly expressed in the brain, with multiple alternatively spliced variants identified in both normal and cancerous tissues.
