Target Information

The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows potassium to flow preferentially into cells.
KIR4.1 (Kir1.2) is highly expressed in the brain, including glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons.
It is also found in myelin-synthesizing oligodendrocytes and is essential for myelination in the developing nervous system.
The human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
KIR4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development, mapping to chromosome 21 in the Down syndrome region, and may be implicated in Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
