Target Information
CD33 is a transmembrane protein of the sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin (Siglec) family. It contains immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs (ITIMs) that recruit SHP-1 and SHP-2 phosphatases for signaling and receptor regulation.
CD33 is expressed on myelomonocytic lineage cells and binds sialic acid residues on cell surface glycans. It is a therapeutic target for acute myeloid leukemia and serves as a marker for peripheral monocytes and granulocyte/macrophage precursors.
CD33 aids in distinguishing myelogenous leukemia cells from lymphoid or erythroid leukemias. Disorders associated with CD33 dysfunction include gallbladder lymphoma and extracutaneous mastocytoma.
