Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

Several classes of SOD have been identified:

• SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular, homodimeric enzyme containing Cu and Zn ions.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme located in the matrix, tetrameric structure (~80 kDa).
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs and vessel walls.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone delivering Cu to SOD1, activating it by cofactor insertion.
