Target Information
The CYP2A6 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze various reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and its expression is induced by phenobarbital. It hydroxylates coumarin and metabolizes nicotine, aflatoxin B1, nitrosamines, and several pharmaceuticals. Variants of this gene can result in poor metabolizer phenotypes. CYP2A6 is part of a large cluster of cytochrome P450 genes on chromosome 19q, previously referred to as CYP2A3.
