Target Information

Alpha-internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed early in neuronal development. It is related to neurofilament triplet proteins (NF-L, NF-M, NF-H) but distinct, sharing similar sequence motifs and intron organization. Many mature neurons contain alpha-internexin along with NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, while some express only alpha-internexin.
Antibodies to internexin serve as unique probes for studying neuronal types and their processes in tissue sections and cultures. Its early developmental expression makes it a useful marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to the neuronal lineage. Research on its use in brain tumor studies remains to be explored but is of potential interest.
