Target Information
Probably functions as a cargo-recognition protein that couples cytoplasmic vesicles to the transport machinery. Plays a role in hair pigmentation, involving shedding of melanosome-containing vesicles from melanocytes and subsequent phagocytosis by keratinocytes. Acts as receptor for RILP and the RILP–DCTN1 complex, contributing to retrograde melanosome transport. Overexpression leads to accumulation of late endosomes and/or lysosomes at the microtubule organizing center (MTOC). Likely binds cholesterol and requires its presence for retrograde transport. Binds phosphatidylinositol 3-, 4-, 5-phosphates and phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate. Required for normal phagosome clearing and lysosomal enzyme activation in retinal pigment epithelium cells. Also essential for degradation of A2E in the eye and may regulate disk membrane biogenesis in photoreceptor rod cells. [UniProt]
