Target Information
Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and epithelial surfaces such as the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members share a conserved cysteine motif.
The DEFA1 gene encodes defensin alpha 1, a component of neutrophil microbicidal granules, contributing to phagocyte-mediated host defense. Several alpha defensin genes are clustered on chromosome 8, with DEFA1 differing from DEFA3 by one amino acid. Both genes exhibit copy number variation.
