Target Information
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a multifactorial disease influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Genome-wide screening has identified several susceptibility loci for NIDDM within the human genome. A putative sugar transporter localized to human chromosome 20q12–q13.1, one of these loci, shows strong resemblance to the mammalian facilitative glucose transporter family (GLUT) and is designated as GLUT10 (HGMW-approved gene symbol SLC2A10). Data suggest that GLUT10 is an excellent candidate gene associated with NIDDM susceptibility.
