Target Information
Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides involved in host defense. They are abundant in neutrophil granules and epithelial tissues of mucosal surfaces (intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, vagina). Members share a conserved cysteine motif.
The DEFA1 gene encodes defensin alpha 1, located on chromosome 8, differing from DEFA3 by one amino acid. Both genes exhibit copy number variation.
