This antibody recognizes and binds human carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in its purified state as well as on tissue sections.
Target Information
CEA (Carcino Embryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during fetal gut development and re-expressed in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors. It belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family and includes multiple domains with structural homology to immunoglobulin regions.
Antibodies to CEA are useful for:
- Identifying the origin of metastatic adenocarcinomas
- Distinguishing pulmonary adenocarcinomas (CEA+) from pleural mesotheliomas (weakly or rarely CEA+)
CEA is a glycoprotein tumor marker found in adenocarcinomas of the digestive system and fetal colon. The CEA family includes cell adhesion molecules and pregnancy-specific glycoproteins located on chromosome 19. The protein mediates cell adhesion and is involved in tissue organization, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune modulation.
Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully characterized.
