Target Information

The Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen acts as an oncofetal antigen, with low expression in normal adult tissues but increasing to fetal levels of expression in hyperplasia or malignancy. It is considered a pan-carcinoma marker. This gene, a member of the mucin family, encodes a membrane-bound, glycosylated phosphoprotein anchored to the apical surface of many epithelia. The degree of glycosylation varies with cell type. It includes a 20 amino acid variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) domain, with the number of repeats ranging from 20 to 120 among individuals. The protein serves a protective function by binding to pathogens and also functions in cell signaling. Overexpression, aberrant intracellular localization, and altered glycosylation of this protein have been associated with carcinomas. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been reported, though only some full-length forms have been determined.
