Target Information
The CD8B antigen is a cell surface glycoprotein found on most cytotoxic T lymphocytes that mediates efficient cell–cell interactions within the immune system. The CD8 antigen acts as a coreceptor with the T-cell receptor to recognize antigens presented by class I MHC molecules on antigen-presenting cells (APCs). The functional coreceptor may be a homodimer (two alpha chains) or a heterodimer (one alpha and one beta chain). Both chains share significant homology with immunoglobulin variable light chains. The CD8B gene encodes the beta chain isoforms, with multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding distinct membrane-associated or secreted forms. A pseudogene has also been identified on chromosome 2.
