Target Information

Protein kinases are enzymes that transfer a phosphate group from ATP onto an acceptor amino acid in a substrate protein. This phosphorylation process mediates most signal transduction in eukaryotic cells, regulating metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes over 500 gene products, classified into 8 major groups based on catalytic domain sequence similarity (PTK and STK).
The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) comprises 50 kinases related to MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, Ste20/MAP4K). MAP kinase cascades, consisting of MAPK and upstream MAPKKs, are well characterized in the yeast pheromone response pathway, where pheromones activate cell surface receptors and trigger MAPK signaling.
