Target Information

CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on various stem cell populations. It functions as a stem cell marker, and its expression on human hematopoietic stem cells is reversible. CD34 may act as a receptor involved in adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors. It is also thought to mediate attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells and may serve as a scaffold for lineage-specific glycans enabling interaction with lectins. The intracellular chain of CD34 is phosphorylated by activated protein kinase C, suggesting a role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
