Antibody detects endogenous levels of total SPINK1.
Target Information
SPINK1 is a trypsin inhibitor whose physiological function is to prevent trypsin-catalyzed premature activation of zymogens within the pancreas.
Defects in SPINK1 are associated with pancreatitis (PCTT) [MIM:167800], characterized by calculi in pancreatic ducts and severe abdominal pain.
Defects also cause susceptibility to tropical calcific pancreatitis (TCP) [MIM:608189], an idiopathic, juvenile, nonalcoholic form of chronic pancreatitis prevalent in tropical regions.
TCP may be linked to fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes (FCPD), influenced by environmental and genetic factors.
TCP differs from alcoholic pancreatitis by earlier onset, pancreatic calcification, high incidence of insulin-dependent but ketosis-resistant diabetes, and increased pancreatic cancer risk.
