Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors. The E2F family plays a crucial role in cell cycle control and tumor suppressor protein function, and is a target of transforming proteins of small DNA tumor viruses.
E2F proteins contain conserved domains including:
- DNA binding domain
- Dimerization domain (interacts with DP proteins)
- Transactivation domain (acidic amino acids)
- Tumor suppressor protein association domain
E2F1, along with E2F2 and E2F3, includes an additional cyclin binding domain. E2F1 binds preferentially to retinoblastoma protein (pRB) in a cell-cycle dependent manner and can mediate both cell proliferation and p53-dependent/independent apoptosis.
