Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the keratin family, which includes intermediate filament proteins responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of epithelial cells. Keratins are divided into cytokeratins and hair keratins. Type I cytokeratins are acidic proteins forming heterotypic pairs with type II keratins. Cytokeratin 20 is a major cellular protein of mature enterocytes and goblet cells, specifically expressed in the gastric and intestinal mucosa. The type I cytokeratin genes are located in the chromosome region 17q12–q21.
