Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins containing two EF-hand motifs. S100 proteins are found in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cells and play roles in regulating cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation.
S100 genes are clustered on chromosome 1q21, with at least 13 members. This protein differs from other S100 proteins by lacking calcium-binding ability in one EF-hand at the N-terminus. It is overexpressed in psoriatic skin lesions but is not a candidate gene for familial psoriasis susceptibility. The exact function remains unclear.
