Target Information
A recently identified protein, termed carboxyl terminus of hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP), interacts with both the constitutive form of hsc70 and the stress-inducible form hsp70. This 35 kDa cytoplasmic protein is highly expressed in striated muscle and across various cultured tissues.
CHIP binds directly to the carboxyl terminus of hsc70 and hsp70, decreasing ATPase activity and reducing chaperone efficiency. It functions as an important component in the ubiquitin-proteasome system, containing a U-box domain and acting as an E3 ubiquitin-ligase in conjunction with hsc70 and hsp90.
