Target Information

Spectrins are filamentous cytoskeletal scaffold proteins that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. They form alpha and beta dimers that associate into tetramers in a head-to-head arrangement. The encoded alpha spectrin is expressed in nonerythrocytic cells and is involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations in this gene cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
