Target Information
The antimicrobial protein BPI is a 55 kDa protein found in the primary (azurophilic) granules of human neutrophils and also detected on the surface of neutrophils, small intestinal, and oral epithelial cells.
BPI binds with high affinity to the lipid A region of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on gram-negative bacteria, leading to:
- Cytotoxicity via damage to bacterial membranes
- Neutralization of bacterial LPS
- Opsonization to enhance phagocytosis by neutrophils
BPI may play a role in airway diseases triggered by LPS since epithelial cells express BPI constitutively. A recombinant fragment, rBPI21 (21 kDa), has shown protective effects against pneumococcal infection.
